What HappyPaws Is For

This site covers pets: dogs and cats, their food, beds, gear, grooming, training, and the ordinary problems of living with an animal. The aim is to answer what owners actually ask rather than what is easiest to write about.

Much of what we publish is problem-solving rather than shopping. Plenty of articles here conclude that the answer is a change in routine rather than a purchase.

Who Runs This Site

HappyPaws is independently owned and operated by one person. It is not a media company, has no parent organization, and is not affiliated with any pet food brand, retailer, or manufacturer whose products appear here.

The household includes one dog, a rescue with a difficult history who is the source of most of the first-person detail on this site. She is not every dog, and we try to write as though we know that.

How We Research What We Publish

Articles draw on veterinary and animal welfare guidance from independent bodies, manufacturer documentation, product specifications, and direct experience where we have it.

Health topics cite genuine authorities: veterinary associations, university veterinary centers, and animal poison control resources. We do not cite pet food companies on nutrition or product brands on health.

Where an article concerns cats, puppies, large breeds, or medical topics, it is written in a research voice. Our direct experience is one adult dog, and we do not stretch it to cover animals we have never lived with.

Photography

Where an article carries a photograph of a product in use, that photograph is original and shows equipment actually owned and used in this household. Those images are not stock, not supplied by a manufacturer, and not reused across articles.

Articles without that kind of direct experience use stock photography, and the absence of an original photo is itself a signal about what kind of article you are reading.

How Recommendations Are Chosen

Products are selected on documented specifications, construction, and fit for the specific use the article addresses. Availability matters too, since recommending something nobody can buy helps nobody.

No manufacturer pays for placement here, no product is included because a brand asked, and no ranking has ever been sold. There are no sponsored posts on this site.

We also do not accept free products in exchange for coverage, which keeps the question of obligation from arising at all.

How We Make Money

This site participates in the Amazon Associates program. When you buy through a link here, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

That creates an obvious incentive to recommend expensive things, and the way we handle it is to say when something cheaper does the job and when you should not buy at all. Several articles on this site conclude that the reader does not need the product in question.

Our full affiliate disclosure covers the arrangement in detail.

Our Limits, Stated Plainly

We are not veterinarians and nothing here is veterinary advice. Health and behavior articles are general information, and an animal that is unwell, in pain, or behaving unusually needs a vet rather than a website.

We do not test products in controlled conditions and have not used most of what we write about. Our direct experience covers one dog of one size with one temperament.

Behavior in particular varies enormously between animals, and guidance that suits one dog may not suit yours. A qualified behaviorist who can see your animal knows more than we do.

Corrections and Updates

Articles are revisited when products are discontinued, when specifications change, or when we learn something that makes an existing recommendation wrong.

If you find an error, tell us through the contact page. Corrections are made to the article rather than appended as a note, since the goal is that the page is right rather than that its history is visible.

We would rather be corrected than be wrong quietly.
