Why Back-Clip Harnesses Do Not Stop Pulling

A lead attached between the shoulder blades pulls a dog backward along the line it is already traveling, which is the same direction it wants to go.

Sled dogs are harnessed this way deliberately, because a back attachment lets a dog put its full body weight into forward movement comfortably.

That is the opposition reflex in ordinary terms: pressure from behind produces forward push rather than a dog easing off.

What the Concern About Collars Is

The case for harnesses rests on what a collar does under load, and it is worth being specific rather than vague.

A collar concentrates force on a narrow band around the throat, which is where the trachea, thyroid, and major blood vessels sit. A dog leaning into a lead is applying that force continuously.

Veterinary concern focuses on tracheal damage, and the risk is higher in small breeds, in flat-faced breeds, and in any dog already diagnosed with a collapsing trachea.

A dog that coughs after walks, or makes a honking sound on the lead, is showing a sign worth taking to a vet rather than solving with equipment alone.

She is an easy dog to walk generally, and the harness definitely helps rather than being incidental.

The pulling that does happen is excitement rather than a training problem. She gets keen and goes too far too fast, which is a different thing from a dog leaning into a lead constantly.

What I actually value is that when that happens, the force is on her chest rather than her neck. That is the whole reason I use one.

Heat matters in warm climates, since a harness covers a section of the body and adds a layer over the chest.

Equipment Is Not Training

The reason harness reviews disagree so much is that people expect equipment to solve a behavior problem, and it cannot.

A front-clip harness reduces pulling while it is on, by making pulling mechanically less effective. Take it off and the dog pulls exactly as before, because nothing was learned.

Training is what changes the behavior, and equipment is what manages it in the meantime. Both are legitimate and they are not substitutes.
